Second Generation Computers (1956-1963) Transistor
The second generation of computers starts when the invention of transistor. These transistors replace the vacuum tubes used in the first generation of computers. It was developed by three Bell Lab scientist, J.Bardeen,H.W Brattain and W.Shockley.Transistor is a device that needed no warm up time, used less energy and faster compared to the vacuum tubes.
Another important development in this second generation was the replacement of Machine language to the assembly language that is laso known as symbolic language. Even though Assembly language are complex in itself but it was much easier than binary code.
Second generation computers also started showing the characteristics of modern day computers with utilities such as printers, disk storage and operating systems. Many financial information was processed using these computers.
In Second Generation computers, the instructions(program) could be stored inside the computer's memory. High-level languages such as COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) and FORTRAN (Formula Translator) were used, and they are still used for some applications nowdays.
